BC COMPANIES HONOURED AT THE 2013 BC EXPORT AWARDS

Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. of Prince George, BC Lands Exporter of the Year and the Premier’s Award for Job Creation

November 15, 2013 (Vancouver, BC) Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters British Columbia (CME BC) and the Ministry of International Trade are pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 BC Export Awards following today’s awards ceremony in Vancouver. The high profile event was attended by hundreds of export industry representatives and government officials. The awards recognize top BC companies for their outstanding contribution to the province’s export industry.

“Congratulations to all of the winners of the 2013 BC Export Awards and to CME BC for their incredible work in recognizing industry excellence through the awards gala this afternoon,” said Minister of International Trade Teresa Wat. “Premier Christy Clark and I are embarking on the Jobs and Trade Mission to Asia later this month to open new doors and get BC goods and services into global markets. We know that by expanding and strengthening trading relationships abroad means real jobs here at home.”

“On behalf of Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters – British Columbia, I would like to congratulate the winners of the 31st Annual BC Export Awards,” stated Marcus Ewert-Johns Vice President, British Columbia. “The BC Export Awards honour BC’s top businesses for leading the charge in bringing British Columbia’s and Canada’s expertise to world markets; In 2012, BC exported $31.3 billion in goods, and in 2013, this increased 4.9% YTD – the second highest among Canadian provinces. These numbers can be credited directly to the hard work and dedication of BC export companies such as those honoured here today.”

“Conditions that promote the flow of goods, services and capital help local economies to prosper, and expanding global trade and international investment enables local businesses to thrive,” said Linda Seymour, Executive Vice President, Head of Commercial Banking and Regional President, Central and Eastern Canada, HSBC Bank Canada. “HSBC has a long and proud history of working with companies looking to grow beyond their borders and find new opportunities abroad, and we are thrilled to offer our congratulations to the winners of the 2013 BC Export Awards.”

Pinnacle Renewable Energy Inc. claimed the Exporter of the Year award and the Premier’s Award for Job Creation. The Prince George based renewable energy company is a major success story for all of Northern BC. The company was founded over 20 years ago by the Swaan family of Quesnel and is the longest established pellet producer in Western Canada. Today, the company operates six pellet plants across BC with a production capacity well over 1 million tons annually. All Pinnacle plants operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are located in an arc centered on Prince George, with Burns Lake and Houston on the western arm and Meadowbank, Quesnel, Williams Lake and Armstrong going south through the Cariboo.

Pinnacle exports to a variety of investment grade customers in Asia and Europe. In the last 15 months Pinnacle has or will secure 100% of its existing productive capacity until 2020 at industry leading prices. These contracts have a total value of approximately $2B which will be supplied by their 6 pellet mills throughout Northern BC. What’s even more impressive is that the raw materials used to produce pellets (wood fibre residuals) were considered waste only a few years ago and are now used to produce a critical renewable source of energy for some of the largest electrical generating facilities in the UK, Japan, Italy and other countries for both commercial and residential consumers, while at the same time providing an important source of revenue to the BC forest industry and an increasingly important employer for many BC communities.

The BC Export Awards celebrate industry excellence with nine sector awards and three individual awards, including the Leadership Award, International Business Studies Award and the Exporter of the Year Award. Every application was carefully evaluated by a selection committee using criteria established for each award to select the top three finalists for all nine sectors.
